KitchenAid Mixer Won't Turn On? What to Check First

KitchenAid mixer won't turn on? The manual's checks (outlet, breaker, 10-15 s reset, 30-min cool-down), what owners found inside, and when to call service.

By Maksud · Published · Updated

If your KitchenAid mixer won’t turn on, KitchenAid’s Use and Care guide for the KSM150 and related models lists three checks. Make sure it’s plugged in, make sure the fuse or breaker for that circuit is working, then turn the mixer off for 10 to 15 seconds and back on. If it still won’t start, let it cool for 30 minutes. If that fails too, the guide sends you to warranty service and says not to take it back to the store.

The manual’s checklist when a KitchenAid mixer won’t start

KitchenAid’s Use and Care guide W11118281 covers the K45 series and the KSM45 to KSM200 series, which includes the Artisan KSM150. Its troubleshooting section for a mixer that “should fail to operate” runs in this order (checked against revision W11118281A):

  1. Is the mixer plugged in?
  2. Is the fuse in the circuit working? With a breaker box, is the circuit closed?
  3. Turn the mixer off for 10 to 15 seconds, then turn it back on.
  4. If it still doesn’t start, let it cool for 30 minutes before turning it back on.
  5. If that doesn’t fix it, go to the warranty and service section. The guide says not to return the mixer to the retailer, because retailers don’t provide service.

KitchenAid no-power symptoms, causes and fixes

KitchenAid sends each symptom to a different answer, so match yours to a row. Wait times come from KitchenAid’s manual and support pages.

Step 1: Rule out the outlet, breaker and cord setup

Plug the mixer into a different outlet first. KitchenAid’s Not Turning On support page lists a faulty outlet and a tripped thermal overload protector among several reasons a mixer may not turn on. The manual adds checking the fuse or the breaker for that circuit.

RemoveandReplace also suggests checking whether a GFCI outlet has tripped if the mixer is on one. That tip is theirs; KitchenAid’s pages don’t mention GFCIs.

The manual sets the electrical rules. Plug into a grounded three-prong outlet; the ratings are 120 V, 60 Hz, and “Do not use an extension cord.” If the cord is too short, the guide says to have a qualified electrician or serviceman install an outlet near the mixer. The power rating is printed on the serial plate; the KSM120 to KSM200 models are rated at 325 W maximum (manufacturer spec).

Step 2: Lever to Off, then a 10-15 second reset

Slide the speed lever to Off, wait 10 to 15 seconds, and turn the mixer back on, per the manual. If the lever doesn’t move smoothly, the guide says to lift it slightly as you slide it.

In an iFixit thread about a Pro 600 that wouldn’t power on, a second answer (not the one marked as the solution) says the mixer has to be at Off when it’s plugged in or it won’t turn on, and suggests turning it off, unplugging it and plugging it back in. That comes from one iFixit answerer, not from the manual.

Step 3: If it quit mid-use, let it cool for 30 minutes

If the mixer ran earlier and now won’t restart, the thermal overload protector may have tripped. The manual says to let it cool for 30 minutes. KitchenAid’s Mixer Shuts Off page explains that some mixers have an internal thermal overload switch that turns them off when they overheat. They should turn back on once completely cool, in about 30 minutes.

The same page says steam can condense on the circuit board and interrupt power, and that the mixer should restart in about 3 minutes once the steam clears. RemoveandReplace gives 15 to 30 minutes for an overheated motor, which is shorter than KitchenAid’s figure; I’d go with KitchenAid’s 30.

The manual says the top getting hot under heavy loads with long mixing times is normal. Why mixers overheat, and how to avoid it, is covered in our stand mixer overheating guide.

Stop if the cord or plug is damaged

Don’t run the mixer with a damaged cord or plug, or after it has malfunctioned. That’s safety rule 6 in KitchenAid’s manual, which says to return it to the nearest Authorized Service Facility for examination, repair or adjustment instead.

KitchenAid’s 2005 service manual, written for professional service technicians, says the same: inspect the power cord first, and don’t run the mixer if the cord is damaged. It says all disassembly and assembly is done with the unit disconnected from power.

What’s usually wrong inside a dead KitchenAid mixer

The service manual’s quick-reference row “Switch lever clicks, but mixer will not run or buzz” lists the causes of an open circuit. They are a faulty plug or cord, a faulty speed control plate, a wire loose from a brush holder, a bad field-to-cord connection, an open armature or field, and a faulty on/off switch. A bad phase control, dirty contacts and incorrect brush orientation also make the list. Its reassembly steps say old motor brushes longer than 5/16 in. can go back in.

Owners on iFixit have reported a few specific fixes:

All of this is technician work. KitchenAid’s warranty excludes “damage resulting from accident, alteration, misuse or abuse.” The manual doesn’t say whether opening the case counts as alteration, so ask KitchenAid before you open a mixer that’s still under warranty.

KitchenAid’s warranty and service for a mixer that won’t run

Per the manual, KitchenAid gives a one-year full warranty from the date of purchase for mixers used in the 50 US states, DC, Puerto Rico and Canada. It pays for your choice of Hassle-Free Replacement or the parts and labor to fix defects at an Authorized KitchenAid Service Center. The number is 1-800-541-6390.

The warranty doesn’t cover:

For a Hassle-Free Replacement, the manual says to have your original sales receipt ready when you call; proof of purchase is required. KitchenAid’s Beater Won’t Turn page says extended service plans can be bought within 30 days of purchase.

How often KitchenAid mixers stop working

I found no published failure rate, so the evidence is thin. In America’s Test Kitchen’s abuse testing, the Artisan KSM150 rocked and got very warm but completed all 12 extra batches of bread and pizza dough in a row. The Classic K45SSWH’s tilt head broke on ATK’s extreme abuse test.

The CPSC recall database (KitchenAid and mixer searches) lists KitchenAid kettle, coffeemaker, toaster and food processor recalls but no KitchenAid stand mixer recall. Snopes rates a viral KitchenAid stand mixer recall rumor False. Details are in our stand mixer recall check.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my KitchenAid mixer not turning on even though it's plugged in?

KitchenAid's Not Turning On support page lists a faulty outlet and a tripped thermal overload protector among several possible reasons. Try another outlet and check the fuse or breaker. Then turn the mixer off for 10 to 15 seconds and back on. If it still won't start, the manual says to let it cool 30 minutes before trying again.

How do I reset a KitchenAid stand mixer?

The reset in KitchenAid's Use and Care guide is to turn the mixer off for 10 to 15 seconds and then turn it back on. The guide describes no reset button. If that doesn't work, let it cool for 30 minutes. If it still won't run, the guide sends you to its warranty and service section.

How long should a KitchenAid mixer cool down before it will run again?

About 30 minutes. KitchenAid's Use and Care guide says to let it cool 30 minutes, and its Mixer Shuts Off support page says the thermal overload switch lets it restart once fully cool, in about 30 minutes. If steam from the bowl caused the shutdown, the support page says it should restart in about 3 minutes once the steam clears from the circuit board.

Can I use an extension cord with a KitchenAid stand mixer?

No. KitchenAid's Use and Care guide says not to use an extension cord. It says to plug the mixer into a grounded three-prong outlet and lists 120 V, 60 Hz. If the cord is too short, the guide says to have a qualified electrician or serviceman install an outlet near the mixer.

Is a dead KitchenAid mixer covered under warranty, and can I return it to the store?

In the first year, KitchenAid's one-year full warranty covers defects with your choice of Hassle-Free Replacement or parts and labor at an Authorized Service Center. It excludes accident, alteration, misuse or abuse. The manual says not to return the mixer to the retailer, because retailers don't provide service. Call 1-800-541-6390.
