Kitchen Watcher Search

Privacy policy

Short version: no ad trackers, and two analytics tools (Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity) so we can see which pages are read and where they're hard to use. Here is exactly what happens.

When you read the site

Kitchen Watcher is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes the technical details of each request, such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested, to deliver the page and protect the site from attacks. We don't use that data to identify you, and we don't run advertising scripts. Cloudflare's own handling is described in the Cloudflare privacy policy.

Site search runs entirely in your browser; what you type is not sent to us.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read, how readers arrive (for example from a search engine) and roughly where they are (country or city level). Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (named _ga) to tell a returning browser from a new one. We don't send Google your name or email, we haven't turned on advertising features or Google Signals, and we don't use this data to show you ads. Google's handling is described in how Google uses information from sites that use its services. We also use Microsoft Clarity to see how pages are used: heatmaps of where readers click and scroll, and anonymised replays of sessions. Clarity sets cookies (such as _clck and _clsk) and masks text typed into the page, so it doesn't capture what you type. Microsoft's handling is described in the Microsoft privacy statement. Google Analytics and any other measurement tags are loaded through Google Tag Manager, which itself doesn't collect personal data; if we add another tool through it, we'll name it on this page first. You can block these with any mainstream content blocker or with Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

When you click a shop link

On pages with retailer links, a small script records which product link was clicked and on which page, so we know which pages people find useful. It doesn't record who you are. The retailer you land on has its own privacy policy and may use cookies to credit us for a purchase.

Email

If you sign up for our newsletter (new guides and recall alerts, about once a month), your email address is held by Buttondown, the service that sends it. Sign-up uses double opt-in: nothing is sent until you confirm from the email Buttondown sends you. Every issue has a one-click unsubscribe link, and we never sell or share your address. To have it deleted, unsubscribe or contact us. Price-drop alerts are not live yet; if we add them, they will be listed here first.

Your requests

You can ask what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, through our contact page. We don't hold names or emails from simply reading the site; the analytics data sits with Google and is not linked to your identity.

Children

Kitchen Watcher is written for adults and doesn't knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
