Best Stand Mixer 2026: 6 Picks for Bread, Budget and Small

Six stand mixers ranked by lab results, measured bowl capacity, manuals and recall records: best overall, best for bread, best budget, best small.

By Maksud · Published · Updated

Our pick

KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer (KSM150PS)

Worth it if you mostly whip, cream and mix cookie or cake batters and want KitchenAid's attachment hub, but its 5-quart bowl holds about 3 working quarts per ATK and it rocks on stiff dough, so weekly bread bakers should look at a bowl-lift.

No. 2

Cuisinart Precision Master 5.5-Quart Stand Mixer (SM-50)

A three-year-warranty tilt-head mixer for cakes and cookies, but America's Test Kitchen measured only 3.6 usable quarts and TechGearLab timed the slowest stiff-dough knead of 10 mixers, so bread-first bakers should look elsewhere.

The best stand mixer for most bakers is the KitchenAid Artisan KSM150PS: TechGearLab scored its Artisan 92 out of 100, the top score here, and Food Network named it best overall. The KitchenAid Classic K45SS is the cheaper KitchenAid that America’s Test Kitchen rates higher. For bread, pick the 7-quart bowl-lift; on a budget, the Hamilton Beach 63393; for small kitchens, the Artisan Mini.

Nobody here baked with these mixers. The ranking comes from published lab results, manuals and recall records, as explained on how we research.

Quick picks: the best stand mixer for each job

  1. KitchenAid Artisan KSM150PS, best overall. TechGearLab’s top score at 92/100 and Food Network’s best overall. See the Artisan review.
  2. KitchenAid Classic K45SS, best lower-cost KitchenAid. ATK’s Best Mid-Priced pick, rated Highly Recommended, and TechGearLab’s Best for Beginners at 80/100. See Classic vs Artisan.
  3. KitchenAid 7-Qt Bowl-Lift KSM70SKXX, best for bread and big batches. ATK rated a sibling model Highly Recommended, and CNET named it best large mixer. See Artisan vs 7-quart.
  4. KitchenAid Artisan Mini KSM3316X, best small. ATK’s Best Small and Food Network’s Best Compact.
  5. Hamilton Beach 63393, best budget stand mixer. ATK says it performed remarkably well at a comparatively low price, but rated it Recommended with Reservations.
  6. Cuisinart Precision Master SM-50, under $250 with reservations. CNET’s best under $250, but ATK rated it Recommended with Reservations and TechGearLab scored it 56/100. See the SM-50 review.

Best stand mixer comparison: lab scores, measured capacity and specs for all six

America’s Test Kitchen is the only outlet we read that measured how much each bowl really holds when mixing. Its figures run 0.5 to 2 quarts below the label on these six (ATK). TechGearLab published bread-kneading times for three of them and cream-whipping times for two (TechGearLab).

Weights are ATK’s measurements, and other outlets disagree. TechGearLab lists the Artisan at 21.3 lb, the Classic at 21.1 lb and the SM-50 at 15.6 lb; CNET’s spec table lists the SM-50 at 20 lb and the 7-quart at 31 lb. ATK’s 7-quart figures are for the KSM70SNDXBM, a sibling of the KSM70SKXX, and TechGearLab doesn’t print a model number for its bowl-lift, so its scores aren’t credited here. TechGearLab doesn’t print a model number for its “KitchenAid Artisan” either; its 5-quart, 325 W, 10-speed spec matches the Artisan Series. ATK’s page is dated Oct 1, 2026, and its prices are as shown on Oct 5, 2026; it shows no price for the Artisan or the Mini.

How we ranked these stand mixers, and where the labs disagree

The order follows weight of evidence, never commission: independent measurements and ratings first, then how consistent owner reports are, then failures and recalls, then price. The method is on how we research.

The labs don’t agree on a winner. CNET’s 2026 top pick is the KitchenAid Artisan Plus at $600 (CNET), ATK’s overall winner is the Ankarsrum Assistent Original, and TechGearLab’s budget pick is an Aucma 6.5-quart. The Artisan Plus and Ankarsrum are cut because they cost more than $500. The Aucma is cut because only one source we could read covers it.

ATK’s verdict on the Artisan is the uncomfortable one. It rates it only Recommended and says it costs about $150 more than the Classic for roughly the same size and performance. The Artisan stays first because TechGearLab scored it 12 points above the Classic and Food Network also named it Best Overall. By ATK’s numbers alone, the Classic is the better buy.

1. KitchenAid Artisan KSM150PS: best stand mixer overall

TechGearLab gave its Artisan 92/100, with 10/10 for both whipping and kneading. It whipped 1 cup of cream to stiff peaks in 1 minute 50 seconds and kneaded whole wheat sandwich bread in 7 minutes, and TechGearLab lists 325 W (TechGearLab). Food Network named it Best Overall; its live page blocked us on Oct 5, 2026, so we read its Aug 20, 2026 archived copy.

America’s Test Kitchen measured 3 quarts of working capacity in the 5-quart bowl. In ATK’s abuse test the Artisan rocked and got very warm but completed all 12 extra batches of bread and pizza dough. ATK heard slight clicking while it kneaded, and the bowl sometimes stuck on its base after hard work. Food Network says it jumped on the countertop with heavier breads, especially at higher speeds.

See the Artisan review and Classic vs Artisan.

2. KitchenAid Classic K45SS: the lower-cost KitchenAid

ATK made the Classic its Best Mid-Priced pick and rated it Highly Recommended; on Oct 5, 2026 its page showed $300 at Amazon, down from $400. It measured 3.25 quarts of working capacity in the 4.5-quart bowl. The same review says the tilt head broke on an extreme abuse test, and the tools are white epoxy-coated rather than stainless (ATK).

TechGearLab scored it 80/100 and named it Best for Beginners. It whipped cream to stiff peaks in about 2 minutes and kneaded sandwich bread in 9 minutes. TechGearLab’s review says the motor heats up during extended use and that it lacks a bowl handle and pouring shield; it lists 275 W (TechGearLab review).

See Classic vs Artisan and the stand mixer overheating guide.

3. KitchenAid 7-Qt Bowl-Lift KSM70SKXX: best stand mixer for bread and big batches

ATK rated the 7-quart bowl-lift Highly Recommended, and its notes call the bread dough “gorgeous and elastic.” It measured 5.25 quarts of working capacity, the most of these six. The catch: ATK notes KitchenAid says not to exceed speed 2 when kneading with the dough hook, and ATK found that made kneading take significantly longer. ATK tested the KSM70SNDXBM, a sibling of the KSM70SKXX, so treat its numbers as close rather than exact.

CNET named it the best large stand mixer at $530 at Amazon. CNET’s spec table lists 500 W, 11 speeds and 31 lb, and its pros mention a half-speed setting (CNET). ATK showed the same $530 at Amazon, down from $650, on Oct 5, 2026. ATK weighed it at 25.6 lb, so the two disagree by more than 5 lb.

See Artisan vs 7-quart and dough hook vs paddle.

4. KitchenAid Artisan Mini KSM3316X: best small stand mixer

ATK named the Mini its Best Small mixer and rated it Recommended. But ATK measured just 1.9 quarts of working capacity in the 3.5-quart bowl and weighed it at 16.05 lb. It couldn’t fit double batches, lacked the torque for sticky, high-hydration pizza dough, and ATK wishes the price better reflected its size, since the Classic holds more and costs less.

Food Network named it Best Compact and noticed a bit of rocking with tacky brioche dough on the highest speed. Not every KitchenAid tool fits it: KitchenAid’s Beater Care page says its stainless 3-pack fits all tilt-heads except the Artisan Mini and the KN15E1X. See KitchenAid attachments compatibility and what size stand mixer you need.

5. Hamilton Beach 63393: best budget stand mixer

ATK said the 63393 “performed remarkably well” at a comparatively low price; on Oct 5, 2026 its page showed $142 at Amazon, down from $152. It measured 3.5 quarts of working capacity in the 4-quart bowl, and at 8.4 lb it’s the lightest here by far. ATK rated it Recommended with Reservations: the tilt-head button stopped working well, the whisk is thin with a plastic top, the housing is plastic, and it rocked and walked while kneading once its suction-cup feet were dusted with flour.

The Hamilton Beach booklet we read defines marked wattage as UL’s maximum stabilized power consumption at high speed under load. It sets a whisk minimum of 2 large egg whites or 1 cup of cream, and says to let a stalled motor cool for 5 minutes (Hamilton Beach manual 840285302). That booklet lists models 63391 through 63395, including the 63393.

Food Network’s “Hamilton Beach All-Metal” and Reviewed’s 63391 (updated June 2024) are different models, so their awards don’t carry over.

6. Cuisinart Precision Master SM-50: under $250, with reservations

CNET named it the best stand mixer under $250, at $217 at Amazon, with 500 W and 12 speeds in its spec table. Cuisinart’s SM-50C manual also lists a 500 W motor and 12 speeds (Cuisinart manual). That power didn’t show up in the lab results: TechGearLab scored it 56/100 with 4/10 for kneading, and its sandwich bread took 13 minutes, the slowest in that test.

ATK rated it Recommended with Reservations: it struggled to whip egg whites, the gaps between its tools and the bowl were big, and tool clearance isn’t adjustable. It measured 3.6 quarts of working capacity in the 5.5-quart bowl. The manual caps yeast dough at 6 cups of white flour and egg whites at 12 large.

How do you choose a stand mixer? Style, bowl size, watts and attachments

Tilt-head or bowl-lift

Five of these six are tilt-heads; only the 7-quart is a bowl-lift. The tilt-head vs bowl-lift guide covers height, bowl access and stability.

Bowl size

The label is not what you get. ATK’s measured working capacity runs 0.5 to 2 quarts below the label on these six, and ATK suggests subtracting about 2 quarts as a rough rule. The stand mixer size guide turns that into batch sizes.

Watts

TechGearLab’s numbers show wattage doesn’t predict results. The 660 W Aucma took 3 minutes 30 seconds to whip 1 cup of cream; the 325 W Artisan took 1 minute 50 seconds. CNET still pitches the 7-quart’s “66% more power”, so read wattage claims with care, and see stand mixer wattage explained.

Speeds and attachments

Check the kneading speed limit, not just the dial count: ATK prints KitchenAid’s speed-2 kneading rule on all four KitchenAids here. The KitchenAid speed guide and the attachments compatibility guide cover which tools fit which mixer.

Stand mixer safety and recalls: what the CPSC record shows

A query of the CPSC Recall API for “stand mixer” on Oct 5, 2026 returned one record: about 1,400 Sunbeam Mixmaster stand mixers (models 01930 and 01940), recalled Aug 27, 1990 for a risk of severe electric shock (CPSC). Our queries the same day for “mixer”, “KitchenAid” and “Cuisinart” turned up no recall of any of these six; the only Hamilton Beach mixer recall listed is for 1992 hand-held mixers. A viral claim that KitchenAid recalled stand mixer attachments over lead is rated False by Snopes (Jordan Liles, Jan 24, 2023).

Each maker handles overload differently. KitchenAid’s support page says some mixers have a thermal overload protection switch, and once fully cooled, about 30 minutes, the mixer should be able to turn back on (KitchenAid support). The Hamilton Beach booklet says to turn off and unplug a stalled mixer, clear it or reduce the load, and let the motor cool 5 minutes. Cuisinart’s manual says an overload protection device shuts the mixer down if it overheats; turn it off, unplug it, remove some ingredients and let it stand a few minutes.

More in the recall check, overheating guide and KitchenAid mixer won’t turn on.

Cleaning and care: what the manuals allow in the dishwasher

Cuisinart’s SM-50C manual says the mixing paddle, dough hook and splash guard are top-rack dishwasher safe, the bowl can go in the dishwasher, and the chef’s whisk must be washed by hand. ATK’s care notes for the SM-50R list the splash guard as hand-wash only, so the two disagree. The Hamilton Beach booklet lists the bowl, splatter shield, dough hook, whisk and flat beater as top-rack safe, and warns against the SANI setting. KitchenAid’s Beater Care page says coated and stainless tools can go in the dishwasher, but burnished aluminum tools are not dishwasher safe and must be washed and dried right away; most KitchenAid wire whips have a burnished aluminum hub, so they aren’t dishwasher safe either.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best stand mixer for most people?

The KitchenAid Artisan KSM150PS is the best-supported stand mixer for most bakers. TechGearLab scored its Artisan 92 out of 100, the highest of any model here, and Food Network named it best overall. America's Test Kitchen rates it only Recommended, though, and says it costs about $150 more than the Classic K45SS, which ATK rates Highly Recommended.

What is the best stand mixer for bread dough?

The KitchenAid 7-quart bowl-lift is the best-supported choice for bread and big batches. America's Test Kitchen rated a sibling model Highly Recommended, said its bread dough was gorgeous and elastic, and measured 5.25 quarts of working capacity, the most of these six. ATK notes KitchenAid says not to exceed speed 2 when kneading with the dough hook.

What is the best budget stand mixer?

The Hamilton Beach 63393 is the best budget stand mixer on this list. America's Test Kitchen said it performed remarkably well at a comparatively low price, showed it at $142 at Amazon on Oct 5, 2026, and weighed it at only 8.4 pounds. ATK still rated it Recommended with Reservations because its tilt-head button stopped working well and it walked across the counter while kneading.

How big a stand mixer bowl do I actually need?

Plan on usable space well below the number on the box. America's Test Kitchen measured working capacity 0.5 to 2 quarts below the label on these six, from 1.9 quarts in the 3.5-quart Artisan Mini to 5.25 quarts in the 7-quart bowl-lift. ATK suggests subtracting about 2 quarts from the stated capacity as a rough estimate.

Do more watts make a better stand mixer?

No, wattage did not predict lab results. TechGearLab timed the 325-watt KitchenAid Artisan whipping 1 cup of cream in 1 minute 50 seconds, while the 660-watt Aucma took 3 minutes 30 seconds. The 500-watt Cuisinart SM-50 scored 56 out of 100 there, below the 275-watt KitchenAid Classic at 80.
