The short answer

An accurate, easy 6-quart basket for families of three or four, if you can live with a fan Food Network put at up to 66 dB and a new-unit plastic smell that TechGearLab never fully got rid of.

Strengths

  • Very accurate heat: TechGearLab measured an average of 401.5°F at a 400°F setting
  • Food Network named it Best Overall after comparing more than 25 air fryers
  • 87.8 sq in of cooking area, per TechGearLab, versus 53.5 sq in in Ninja's 4-quart AF101
  • Best Buy owners rate it 4.6 of 5 and praise ease of use most often

Weaknesses

  • Plastic smell and taste when new; TechGearLab still tasted plastic after months
  • Loud: Food Network puts the fan at up to 66 decibels
  • Bulky, and TechGearLab found its preheat longer than competitors'
  • Instant sells several 6-quart Vortex Plus versions, so check the model number

The Instant Vortex Plus 6 quart suits a family of three or four that wants an accurate, simple basket air fryer: TechGearLab measured it within 1.5°F of a 400°F setting, and Food Network named it Best Overall. Skip it if noise or smell bothers you. Food Network puts the fan at up to 66 dB, and the new-unit plastic smell is owners’ top complaint.

Specs are from Instant’s product page for the stainless 6-quart. Instant recommends preheating and says it “takes around 5 minutes or less,” per that page.

Price: Food Network’s list, updated Aug 14, 2026, showed $90 against a regular $150 when I read it on Sep 27, 2026 (Food Network). The same day, Best Buy listed the stainless 6-quart as sold out, and Amazon’s listing loaded without a price for our location. TechGearLab gives a $150 list price.

Which Vortex Plus is this? Instant sells more than one 6-quart Vortex Plus. The stainless 140-3006-01 on Instant’s product page doesn’t list a ClearCook window or OdorErase filters; other 6-quart versions have both. Reviewed’s unit had the OdorErase filter, and TechGearLab doesn’t name a model number. Check the model on the box or listing before you buy.

What lab tests found: accurate heat, slower preheat

Heat accuracy is the standout. TechGearLab measured an average of 401.5°F at a 400°F setting and gave it 10 of 10 for temperature accuracy (TechGearLab). Across TechGearLab’s comparison, that beats the Ninja Foodi 2-basket’s 386.4°F at the same setting (TechGearLab best air fryers).

Preheat is slower than rivals’. TechGearLab measured a 3-minute preheat and lists a longer preheat than competitors as a con.

Results are good, not the crispiest everywhere. Food Network calls it Best Overall after comparing more than 25 models and credits it with the crispiest, most even results across fries, chicken and cake (Food Network). TechGearLab disagrees in part: it scored cooking quality 7 of 10 and found crispiness underwhelming on some foods. Overall it ranked the Vortex Plus third of ten, with a score of 78. Reviewed found the single-basket 6-quart crispy and even (Reviewed).

Size. TechGearLab measured 87.8 square inches of cooking area and calls the unit bigger than competitors. The Ninja AF101 has 53.5 square inches by the same measure, which is why that one suits one or two people and this one suits more (Ninja AF101 review).

Noise. Food Network lists the fan as loud at up to 66 decibels. No other source I found published a decibel figure.

Does the Vortex Plus plastic smell go away?

The plastic smell is the complaint that comes up most. Smell is the top complaint in Best Buy’s owner reviews (8 mentions out of 113 reviews), and owners describe the burn-off period as long. TechGearLab went further: fries and tots kept a plastic flavor no matter how often the unit was cleaned and preheated, and the review says the taste persisted even after months.

The OdorErase filter on some versions doesn’t solve cooking smells either. Reviewed noticed little difference with it, and bacon and fried chicken odors still filled the kitchen (Reviewed).

So the evidence splits. Most owners say the smell fades, while one lab says the taste never fully left. If you’re sensitive to it, buy from a store with an easy return policy.

Vortex Plus problems: E1 and E2 codes, recalls

Nobody I found has published a watt-draw figure or a multi-year durability record for this model, so I can’t tell you how the coating holds up past the first year.

Who the Vortex Plus 6 quart suits (and who should skip it)

Buy it if you cook for three or four, want a basket that holds its set temperature, and like a simple dial. At the $90 Food Network showed, that accuracy is good value; at the $150 list price, compare first.

Skip it if you cook for one or two, since the Ninja AF101 takes far less counter space. Skip it too if you want a main and a side done at once, which the two-basket Ninja DZ201 handles. If the plastic taste reports worry you, compare the Cosori TurboBlaze, another 6-quart basket.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Instant Vortex Plus plastic smell go away?

For most owners it fades, but not for everyone. Smell is the top complaint in Best Buy's owner reviews, and owners describe a long burn-off period. TechGearLab reported that fries and tots kept a plastic flavor even after months, despite repeated cleaning and preheating. If you're sensitive to it, buy where returns are easy.

Is the Instant Vortex Plus 6 quart loud?

Yes, it is on the loud side. Food Network lists the fan as loud at up to 66 decibels. No other source I found has published a decibel figure for this model, so that 66 dB reading is the only number available. Plan for it if the fan will run in an open-plan room.

What do E1 and E2 mean on an Instant Vortex Plus?

E1 means an open circuit and E2 means a temperature sensor short circuit, per Instant's user manual for the 140-3006-01. For both codes, the manual's fix is to contact Instant's Consumer Care. No CPSC recall for the Vortex Plus 6 quart was listed as of Sep 27, 2026.

Does the Vortex Plus 6 quart have OdorErase and a viewing window?

It depends on the version. The stainless 140-3006-01 on Instant's product page doesn't list a ClearCook window or OdorErase filters, while other 6-quart versions have both. Reviewed found the OdorErase filter made little difference, as bacon and fried chicken odors still filled the kitchen. Check the model number before you buy.
