KitchenAid Attachments Compatibility: What Fits Your Mixer
Hub attachments fit every KitchenAid stand mixer; beaters and bowls are matched to mixer type. How to check yours, plus the Artisan Mini exceptions.
KitchenAid attachments compatibility comes down to where the part connects. Per KitchenAid’s Attachment Fit Guarantee, every power-hub attachment fits every KitchenAid stand mixer regardless of age. Bowls, beaters, whisks and dough hooks are matched to mixer type (Artisan Mini, full-size tilt-head or bowl-lift) and bowl size, and the Artisan Mini can’t take the ice cream maker or the Precise Heat Mixing Bowl.
I compiled this from KitchenAid’s own support pages and America’s Test Kitchen’s attachment review; nothing here is from hands-on use. Our research method explains how sources are chosen.
Two kinds of KitchenAid attachment: hub attachments vs bowl tools
- Hub attachments plug into the power hub on the front of the mixer head. America’s Test Kitchen describes it as the hub behind the silver cap labeled KitchenAid.
- Bowl tools slide onto the beater shaft under the head: the flat beater, dough hook, wire whip and flex edge beater.
- Bowls mount on the base, and the mount differs by mixer type.
So when people ask “do KitchenAid attachments fit all models”, the honest answer is yes for the first group and no for the other two. Wikipedia’s KitchenAid article makes the same split: beaters and bowls aren’t necessarily compatible even across similar models made at the same time.
Compatibility table: what fits each KitchenAid mixer type
Each cell is from a KitchenAid support page or America’s Test Kitchen (ATK). “Not published” means no source read says either way.
| Accessory or attachment | Artisan Mini tilt-head (KSM3316X, 3.5 qt) | Full-size tilt-head (K45SS, KSM150PS) | Bowl-lift (KSM70SKXX) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hub attachments (pasta roller, food grinder, spiralizer, slicer/shredder) | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fit Guarantee; Artisan Mini FAQ |
| Ice cream maker bowl | Does not fit (bowl too large for base) | Fits (ATK: needs a 4.5-qt or larger model) | Not excluded: KSMICM fits all bowl-lifts except the K5SS, KSM50, KSM500 and KSM450 | Fit Guarantee; ATK; KSMICM product page |
| Precise Heat Mixing Bowl | Does not fit (bowl too large for base) | Not published | Not published | Fit Guarantee; Artisan Mini FAQ |
| Juice and sauce attachment | Fits, but carafe too tall; use a shorter container | Fits (hub attachment) | Fits (hub attachment) | Fit Guarantee |
| Stainless steel beater 3-pack (KSM5TH3PSS) | Does not fit | Fits (all tilt-heads except Mini and KN15E1X) | Not listed (KitchenAid lists tilt-head fit) | Beater Care |
| Bowls | 3.5-qt Mini bowl | Tilt-head bowl on clamping plate; match quart size | Bowl-lift bowl on locating pins and spring latch | Artisan Mini FAQ; tilt-head and bowl-lift assembly pages |
| Flex edge beater | Comes with the Mini (ATK); dishwasher safe (KitchenAid) | Not published | Not published | ATK stand mixer review; Artisan Mini FAQ |
KitchenAid’s KSMICM ice cream maker page says it fits all tilt-head mixers except the Artisan Mini KSM3316 and KSM3317, and all bowl-lift mixers except the 5, 5.5 and 6 qt K5SS, KSM50, KSM500 and KSM450. The 7-qt KSM70 is not on that exception list, though the page does not name it, and the older KICA0WH may differ.
Do KitchenAid attachments fit all models? The hub answer
Yes, if it plugs into the hub. KitchenAid’s Fit Guarantee says the universal power hub means all attachments fit all its stand mixers regardless of age, and every attachment box says “Fits all KitchenAid Stand Mixers.”
KitchenAid’s troubleshooting page sets the tolerance: a gap of up to 1/8 inch between the attachment housing and the hub is acceptable.
Wikipedia goes further: it says every KitchenAid mixer since the Model K has allowed cross-generational hub compatibility, so 1930s attachments work on modern mixers and the reverse. Treat that as context, not a KitchenAid statement; KitchenAid itself says only “regardless of age.”
Some pages claim only post-1990 mixers take current attachments, or put a percentage on how many fit. No KitchenAid source I read supports either; KitchenAid says “regardless of age” and names only the Mini exceptions.
KitchenAid tilt-head vs bowl-lift beaters: why they don’t swap
Bowl tools are matched to the bowl, and the bowls mount differently. Per KitchenAid’s bowl-lift assembly page, the bowl’s supports sit over locating pins and you press the back down until the bowl pin snaps into the spring latch. Per the tilt-head assembly page, the bowl sits on a silver metal clamping plate and turns clockwise.
Both pages describe the beater fitting the same way. With the speed control OFF and the mixer unplugged, slip the beater onto the shaft and turn it right, hooking it over the pin. The tilt-head page adds one step: press upward as far as possible. So the fitting alone doesn’t tell you a beater suits your bowl. KitchenAid states beater fit by mixer type, and I found no published beater length spec to compare.
Even within one type, Wikipedia notes that not all current six-quart bowl-lift mixers use the same accessories. Check the beater listing for your exact model number.
If you’re still choosing a mixer, see tilt-head vs bowl-lift or the KSM150PS vs KSM70SKXX comparison. After fitting a new beater, run the dime test to check clearance.
Artisan Mini attachments: what works and what doesn’t
KitchenAid’s Artisan Mini FAQ says the Mini is compatible with all hub-powered attachments. The exceptions, per that FAQ and the Fit Guarantee (which names the Mini as KSM3311/16):
- Ice cream maker: won’t fit; the bowl is too large for the Mini base.
- Precise Heat Mixing Bowl: won’t fit, same reason.
- Juice and sauce attachment: fits, but its carafe is too tall. KitchenAid suggests a shorter container.
- Stainless steel beater 3-pack: excluded, per KitchenAid’s Beater Care page.
The Mini has a 3.5-qt bowl and weighs 16 lb (manufacturer spec). America’s Test Kitchen’s stand mixer review lists the Mini’s actual capacity as 1.9 qt and says all KitchenAid attachments fit it except the ice cream maker. ATK’s attachment review says the ice cream maker needs a 4.5-qt or larger mixer, which agrees with KitchenAid. Compare the Mini with full-size models on our best stand mixers page.
Beater materials and the KN15E1X exception
KitchenAid’s Beater Care page lists three beater materials:
- Stainless steel: dishwasher safe. The 3-pack (KSM5TH3PSS) and single parts (KSM5THFBSS flat beater, KSM5THDHSS dough hook, KSM5THWWSS wire whip) fit all tilt-head models except the Artisan Mini and the KN15E1X (Accolade).
- Coated: cast aluminum with a food-grade polyester powder coating, dishwasher safe. KitchenAid says it moved to all dishwasher-safe beaters in 2018.
- Burnished aluminum: polished aluminum, not dishwasher safe; wash and dry it right away to prevent oxidation.
Care details by part are on are stand mixer parts dishwasher safe.
How to check what fits your KitchenAid mixer
- Find the model number. Per KitchenAid Ireland’s FAQ, the model and serial sticker is underneath the base. Place the mixer on a towel or soft surface and turn it over carefully so you don’t bend the speed control knob or locking mechanism.
- Identify the type. In our hub, the K45SS and KSM150PS are full-size tilt-heads, the KSM70SKXX is a bowl-lift, and the KSM3316X is the Artisan Mini.
- Hub attachments: any model, per the Fit Guarantee.
- Bowls and bowl tools: match mixer type and bowl quart size on the listing.
- Check the fit. KitchenAid’s Fit Guarantee lists the signs of an improper fit: the attachment falls out after the knob is fastened, spins or wobbles in use, or loosens enough to fall off.
When an attachment won’t fit or stay in the hub
KitchenAid’s troubleshooting page gives a simple diagnosis:
- Tighten the thumbscrew fully; the attachment shouldn’t move. A gap of up to 1/8 inch is fine, and a small mark where the screw meets the housing is normal.
- If other attachments fit well, the problem is likely that attachment’s white plastic housing.
- If no attachments fit, the mixer’s power hub may be the issue.
Either way, the Fit Guarantee says to contact KitchenAid. For which speed to run each attachment, see the KitchenAid speed guide.
Which KitchenAid attachments independent reviewers rate
America’s Test Kitchen’s attachment review (June 24, 2020) is the only independent comparison I found:
- Food grinder: Highly Recommended. Processed meat faster than a food processor, yielded almost as much meat as went in, and has some dishwasher-safe parts; only coarse and medium plates, no fine. ATK noted KitchenAid had released an updated grinder it had not yet tested.
- 3-piece pasta roller and cutter: Recommended. The cutters made fettuccine and angel hair up to 4 minutes faster than a Marcato manual model.
- Spiralizer: Recommended with Reservations. ATK found it easy to clean but fussy to use, and it generated a lot of waste.
- Gourmet Pasta Press: Not Recommended. ATK reports that following the manual’s speed 10 instruction overheated the gears and broke its mixer.
- Ice cream maker: Not Recommended. ATK detected a few ice crystals in sorbet, found the two-part paddle fussy to attach, and its high blades let unmixed clumps spin on top.
That review is six years old and I found no newer independent measurements, so the evidence is thin.
Third-party and other-brand attachments
KitchenAid’s guarantee covers its own attachments. I found no KitchenAid statement on aftermarket parts, so check that the seller lists your model number. Whether other brands’ hubs take KitchenAid attachments is unconfirmed.

Frequently asked questions
Do KitchenAid attachments fit all models?
Hub attachments do. KitchenAid's Attachment Fit Guarantee says every attachment that plugs into the power hub fits every KitchenAid stand mixer regardless of age, and the boxes say Fits all KitchenAid Stand Mixers. Bowls and bowl tools such as beaters, whisks and dough hooks are different: they are matched to the mixer type and bowl size.
Do tilt-head beaters fit a bowl-lift KitchenAid mixer?
KitchenAid does not list them as interchangeable. Its Beater Care page lists the stainless steel beater 3-pack as fitting tilt-head models, and its assembly pages describe different bowl mounts for tilt-head and bowl-lift mixers. Both attach beaters by slipping them on the shaft and turning right over a pin, so the fitting alone does not show a beater suits your bowl. Buy by mixer type and bowl size.
What attachments work with the KitchenAid Artisan Mini?
All hub-powered attachments work with the Artisan Mini, per KitchenAid's Artisan Mini FAQ. The ice cream maker and Precise Heat Mixing Bowl do not; KitchenAid's Fit Guarantee says their bowls are too large for the Mini base. The juice and sauce attachment fits, but its carafe is too tall, so any shorter container can be used. KitchenAid's Beater Care page also excludes the Mini from the stainless beater 3-pack.
Is a small gap between the attachment and the hub normal?
Yes, up to a point. KitchenAid's troubleshooting page says a gap of up to 1/8 inch between the attachment housing and the mixer hub is entirely acceptable. Its Fit Guarantee page says an attachment fits poorly if it falls out after the knob is fastened, or spins, wobbles or works loose while the mixer runs.
Does the KitchenAid ice cream maker fit every mixer?
No. KitchenAid says the ice cream maker does not fit the Artisan Mini because the bowl is too large for its base. America's Test Kitchen says it needs a 4.5-quart or larger KitchenAid. ATK also rated it Not Recommended in 2020, citing a few ice crystals in sorbet, a fussy two-part paddle, and high blades that let unmixed clumps spin on top.
