KitchenAid Artisan vs 7 Quart Bowl Lift: Which to Buy

KitchenAid Artisan vs 7 quart bowl lift: measured capacity, whipping and kneading times, weight and price from ATK, TechGearLab and CNET. See which fits.

By Maksud · Published · Updated

Buy the Artisan KSM150PS unless you regularly fill a big bowl with bread or pizza dough. In the KitchenAid Artisan vs 7 quart bowl lift matchup, the cheaper Artisan was faster in TechGearLab’s timings. It whipped a cup of cream in 1 min 50 s vs 2 min 40 s and kneaded whole-wheat dough in 7 vs 10 minutes. The 7-qt KSM70SKXX wins on usable volume: America’s Test Kitchen measured 5.25 qt vs 3 qt.

Nobody here tested either mixer. The numbers come from America’s Test Kitchen (ATK), TechGearLab, CNET and Tom’s Guide, plus KitchenAid’s own manual and support pages, as explained in how we research.

KitchenAid 5 quart vs 7 quart: how much more the bowl-lift really holds

The 7-qt holds about 75% more than the Artisan, not 40%. ATK measured each bowl’s working capacity and found 3 qt in the 5-qt Artisan and 5.25 qt in the 7-qt (5.25 ÷ 3 = 1.75). CNET’s “40% more volume” matches the labeled sizes, 7 ÷ 5.

ATK tested the black KSM70SNDXBM, another 7-qt KSM70 bowl-lift, not the KSM70SKXX by that number. On ATK’s figures, one 7-qt bowl holds nearly two Artisan-sized batches. For sizing any mixer to your batches, see what size stand mixer do I need.

Whipping and kneading: the Artisan was faster in TechGearLab’s timings

TechGearLab timed the Artisan faster in every timed whipping and kneading test. A cup of cream reached stiff peaks in 1.83 minutes against 2.67, and a half cup in 1.75 against 3.50. Whole-wheat sandwich dough took 7 minutes against 10. Its sub-scores follow: whipping 10 vs 6, kneading 10 vs 7, overall 92 vs 76.

The 7-qt won beating, 9 vs 7. TechGearLab credited its flex-edge beater for creaming but said its bowl is less tapered than the Artisan’s, which gives less complete coverage. TechGearLab names the unit only “KitchenAid 7 Quart Bowl Lift,” with no model number; its specs (7 qt, 500 W, 11 speeds, double flex-edge beater) match the KSM70.

ATK’s notes on the 7-qt are kinder. It whipped as few as 2 egg whites and powered through big double batches of pizza dough and stiff bread dough. ATK says the Artisan also finished all 12 abuse batches but rocked and got very warm, and made a slight clicking sound while kneading bagel bread dough.

Wattage: 325 W vs 500 W doesn’t predict the results

TechGearLab’s spec table lists the 7-qt at 500 W and the Artisan at 325 W; CNET also lists 500 W for the 7-qt. CNET’s “66% more power” doesn’t match those numbers: 500 W is about 54% more than 325 W, and CNET doesn’t say what it compared against. Either way, the lower-wattage Artisan was the faster machine in TechGearLab’s timings.

ATK quotes Bridget Smyser, an engineering professor at Northeastern University, calling torque “the true measure of a stand mixer’s success.” Prudent Reviews compares the Artisan with the Pro Line, listed at 1.3 HP (969 W) and 32 lb. That is a different model from the 500 W KSM70, so its numbers don’t carry over. More in stand mixer wattage explained.

The speed-2 kneading limit applies to both mixers

Per ATK, KitchenAid says not to go above speed 2 with the dough hook on any of its stand mixers. The KSM55/KSM60/KSM70 bowl-lift manual says to use Speed 2 for yeast doughs. It warns that higher speed “creates high potential for Stand Mixer failure.” It also says its spiral dough hook kneads most yeast dough within 4 minutes.

In 2024 KitchenAid dropped its old 4 to 6 minute kneading time limit, per ATK, but the speed cap stays. ATK found speed-2 kneading took significantly longer than on mixers without the limit. So on dough, neither mixer should be run faster than speed 2.

The 7-qt adds a 1/2 speed for folding, per ATK, CNET and the manual. See the KitchenAid mixer speed guide and dough hook vs paddle.

Size and weight: the 7-qt stays on the counter

ATK lists the Artisan at 14 in tall and the 7-qt at 16.5 in. ATK says a tilt-head needs a lot of overhead clearance, so most people have to pull it out from under cabinets to raise the head. A bowl-lift needs no extra headroom because only the bowl moves, but the 7-qt is 2.5 in taller to begin with.

Weight figures for the 7-qt disagree. ATK lists 25.6 lb (KSM70SNDXBM) and TechGearLab measured 25.4 lb. CNET lists 31 lb and Tom’s Guide 34.6 lb. The Artisan is 20.7 lb (ATK) or 21.3 lb (TechGearLab).

Either way, the 7-qt is a machine you leave in place; ATK says to bear its weight in mind if you plan to move it often. The mechanism differences are covered in tilt-head vs bowl-lift mixer.

Is the 7 quart KitchenAid worth it? Price per usable quart

Per usable quart, the 7-qt is cheaper. On Oct 5, 2026, the Artisan was $379.95 at Amazon for ATK’s 3 measured quarts, about $127 per quart. The 7-qt was $530 at Amazon for 5.25 quarts, about $101 per quart.

That only pays off if you fill the bowl. Tom’s Guide calls it the one to buy if you like to batch bake, and lists “probably bigger than most people need” among its reasons to avoid it. For single cake or cookie batches and small amounts of whipping, TechGearLab timed the Artisan faster.

Bowl handles, sticking and recall status

ATK says the Artisan’s bowl sometimes gets stuck on its base after hard work, and TechGearLab lists the tilt-head blocking bowl access as its one con. For the 7-qt, TechGearLab’s cons are a large footprint, heavy weight and mediocre whipping. The sources split on the 7-qt’s bowl handle: ATK found it gave a secure grip, while Tom’s Guide says the bowl “could do with two handles” for lifting when full.

The CPSC recall database shows no KitchenAid stand-mixer recall as of Oct 5, 2026. Snopes rates False a 2023 rumor that KitchenAid recalled white mixer attachments over lead. Check any model with the stand mixer recall check, and see KitchenAid mixer leaking oil if grease appears around the head.

Attachments carry over, tools may not

Both mixers have a front attachment hub, per TechGearLab’s spec table, and CNET lists 12 optional attachments for the 7-qt, including an ice cream maker, meat grinder and pasta roller. Beaters are another matter. KitchenAid’s Beater Care page sells its stainless 3-pack (KSM5TH3PSS) as fitting tilt-head models and lists bowl-lift tools separately, so don’t assume Artisan tools fit the 7-qt. Frequently asked questions

Is the KitchenAid 7 quart worth it over the 5 quart Artisan?

Only if you often fill a big bowl. America's Test Kitchen measured 5.25 usable quarts in the 7-qt against 3 in the Artisan, about 75% more. TechGearLab timed the Artisan faster at whipping and kneading, though. At $530 vs $379.95 at Amazon on Oct 5, 2026, the 7-qt works out to about $101 per usable quart and the Artisan about $127.

How much more does the 7 quart bowl lift actually hold than the Artisan?

About 75% more usable volume, not 40%. America's Test Kitchen measured a working capacity of 3 quarts in the 5-qt Artisan and 5.25 quarts in the 7-qt bowl-lift (it tested the KSM70SNDXBM, not the KSM70SKXX). CNET's 40% figure matches the labeled bowl sizes, 7 quarts against 5.

Is the 7 quart bowl lift more powerful than the Artisan?

It's rated higher, 500 W against 325 W in TechGearLab's spec table, but that didn't make it faster. In TechGearLab's timings the Artisan whipped 1 cup of cream in 1 min 50 s against 2 min 40 s and kneaded whole-wheat sandwich dough in 7 minutes against 10. The 7-qt scored higher only for beating.

What speed should I knead dough at on a KitchenAid mixer?

Speed 2. America's Test Kitchen reports that KitchenAid says not to exceed speed 2 with the dough hook on all its stand mixers, and the KSM70 bowl-lift manual says higher speed creates high potential for mixer failure. Per ATK, KitchenAid dropped its old 4 to 6 minute kneading limit in 2024, and speed-2 kneading took ATK noticeably longer than on mixers without the limit.

Has the KitchenAid 7 quart or Artisan been recalled?

Not as of Oct 5, 2026, the date we last checked. The CPSC recall database lists KitchenAid recalls for kettles, coffeemakers, toasters and food processors, but no stand mixer. Snopes rated False a January 2023 rumor that KitchenAid recalled white mixer attachments over lead.
