Instant Vortex Plus Error Codes: E1, E2 and No-Heat Fixes
E1 and E2 on the Instant Vortex Plus 6qt, per Instant's manual: what each code means, what to check yourself, and when to stop and call Consumer Care.
The Instant Vortex Plus error codes in Instant’s US manual for the 6-quart air fryer are just two. E1 means “Open circuit” and E2 means “Temperature sensor short circuit,” and the listed fix for both is “Contact Consumer Care.” The manual gives no owner reset for either code, and it says not to attempt to repair, replace or modify components. Preheating, Add Food, Turn Food and End are normal messages.
The manual quoted here is Instant’s Vortex Plus 6QT US user manual, revision R10 per its file name, with an art release date of May 21, 2024. We checked it against two UK Vortex Plus manuals. Where we add our own reading, we label it.
Instant Vortex Plus error codes and symptoms, per the manual
| Code or symptom | What Instant’s manual says | What you can safely check | When to stop and contact Consumer Care | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | Open circuit; contact Consumer Care (per Instant manual) | Nothing: the manual lists no owner check. Select Cancel, then unplug (per Instant manual) | Now: the manual’s only listed fix is Consumer Care | US 6qt manual, R10 |
| E2 | Temperature sensor short circuit; contact Consumer Care (per Instant manual) | Nothing: the manual lists no owner check. Select Cancel, then unplug (per Instant manual) | Now: the manual’s only listed fix is Consumer Care | US 6qt manual, R10 |
| Won’t turn on | Cord not firmly plugged in, or outlet not powered (per Instant manual) | Plug in firmly; plug another appliance into the same outlet (per Instant manual) | The manual lists no further step; if the outlet works and the unit is still dead, contact Consumer Care (our reading) | US 6qt manual, R10 |
| Black smoke | Low-smoke-point oil, food residue on the heating coil, chamber or accessories, or appliance malfunction (per Instant manual) | Cancel, unplug, cool to room temperature, then clean; switch to a high-smoke-point oil (per Instant manual) | Appliance malfunction is a listed cause, with the fix “Contact Consumer Care” (per Instant manual) | US 6qt manual, R10 |
| White smoke | High-fat foods, water vapor from wet food, or seasoning blown into the element (per Instant manual) | Pat food dry; remove excess fat from the chamber; oil food before seasoning (per Instant manual) | The manual lists no malfunction case for white smoke | US 6qt manual, R10 |

What does the Instant Vortex E1 error mean?
Instant’s wording is two words: “Open circuit.” In general electrical terms, that means a broken path somewhere in a circuit. The manual does not say which circuit, and it lists no owner check.
The manual’s safety section says not to operate the appliance after it malfunctions, and to contact Consumer Care. So for E1: select Cancel, unplug it and contact Instant. Do not open the housing.
Miss Vickie blames E1 on low water levels. An air fryer holds no water, and Instant’s manual says not to add water or other liquid to the cooking chamber when air frying. AirFryerZone says E1 can mean thermistor resistance is out of range. Instant’s manual says neither.
What does the Instant Vortex E2 error mean?
E2 is “Temperature sensor short circuit,” per the manual, and the fix is again “Contact Consumer Care.” The manual lists no cause beyond that and no owner fix.
A retailer Q&A page on OwnIt calls a Vortex Plus oven’s E1 a temperature sensor issue and says to unplug it for at least 30 minutes, without citing a manual. Miss Vickie blames E2 on loose anti-dry sensors or an overfilled basket. Instant’s US manual and both UK Vortex Plus manuals say nothing about either code clearing on its own. Treat E2 like E1: stop and contact Consumer Care.
AirFryerZone also lists E3, E4 and E5 codes for Instant air fryers. None of the three Vortex Plus basket manuals we read lists any code beyond E1 and E2.
Why is my Vortex Plus not heating with no error code?
Instant’s manual has no troubleshooting entry for a unit that runs but doesn’t heat. Rule out these operating notes from the manual first:
- Basket seating. Per the manual, when the basket is inserted securely, its front is flush with the front of the unit.
- Program choice. Reheat and Dehydrate do not preheat, and Reheat doesn’t prompt you to add food. Reheat shows the target temperature and time right away.
- Fan after Cancel. Depending on the internal temperature, the fan may keep running after you press Cancel, to cool the unit.
If none of these explain it, contact Consumer Care; the manual says not to operate the appliance after it malfunctions. For a reference point, TechGearLab’s review reported its Vortex Plus averaging 1.5°F from the set temperature, with a 3-minute preheat.
Both the US manual and Instant’s UK ClearCook manual say not to use the appliance for more than 60 minutes in a 2-hour period. The US manual exempts programs that cook below 400°F / 204°C; the UK ClearCook manual states no exception.
Which display messages are not errors?
These messages are normal operation, per the US manual:
- Preheating: the program has started and the unit is heating to the target temperature.
- Add Food: the target temperature is reached; put food in the basket.
- Turn Food: a reminder partway through. If you don’t remove the basket, cooking resumes after 10 seconds.
- End: the program has finished. Reminder beeps sound at 5, 20 and 60 minutes.
If your display shows one of these, the manual treats it as normal.
Can you repair a Vortex Plus yourself?
The manual warns against attempting to repair, replace or modify components, because doing so may cause electric shock or fire, and it will void the warranty. The warranty is a 1-year limited warranty for the original owner, proof of the original purchase date is required, and modified units are excluded.
The manual lists Consumer Care by email at support@instantpot.com, along with a customer care center and the Instant Connect app. In the UK, the ClearCook manual lists UKSupport@instantbrands.com and +44 (0) 3331 230051. Per the US manual, the model number is on the back of the unit and the serial number on the bottom; warranty returns need proof of purchase and a description of the problem. If the unit is unfixable, our Vortex Plus 6-quart review and best air fryers cover what to consider next.
Is there an Instant Vortex Plus recall?
CPSC’s recall database, searched on September 27, 2026, returned no recall notice for any Instant or Vortex air fryer. The only Instant-titled product recall it returned was a 2015 Instant Pot pressure cooker recall. The same database lists air fryer recalls from other brands, including CPSC’s February 2023 notice, Two Million COSORI Air Fryers Recalled by Atekcity Due to Fire and Burn Hazards.
Search cpsc.gov with the model number on your unit’s label to check for yourself.
Do other Vortex Plus models use the same codes?
For the basket air fryers we checked, yes. The US 6-quart manual, Instant’s UK 5.7 L ClearCook manual (model AFB6132BK) and its UK Vortex Plus Dual 7.6 L manual all list only E1 (open circuit) and E2 (temperature sensor short circuit), each ending in contact Consumer Care (Customer Care in the Dual manual).
The Vortex Plus air fryer ovens are different products with a rotisserie. Consumer Reports’ Vortex Plus review covers a 1,500-watt Vortex Plus oven, not the 6-quart basket model. Don’t mix the two up when looking for codes or parts. If you own a Cosori instead, see Cosori TurboBlaze error codes.

Frequently asked questions
What does E1 mean on an Instant Vortex Plus air fryer?
E1 means open circuit, per Instant's Vortex Plus 6-quart US manual, and the only listed fix is to contact Consumer Care. The manual gives no owner reset or check for E1, and its safety section says not to operate the appliance after it malfunctions. Unplug it and contact Instant.
What does E2 mean on an Instant Vortex Plus?
E2 means temperature sensor short circuit, per Instant's Vortex Plus 6-quart US manual, and the listed fix is to contact Consumer Care. A retailer Q&A page advises unplugging and waiting 30 minutes for a sensor error. Neither Instant's US manual nor its two UK Vortex Plus manuals say that, so treat E2 as a fault.
Can I reset an Instant Vortex Plus error code?
Instant's Vortex Plus 6-quart manual lists no reset for E1 or E2; both entries say to contact Consumer Care. The manual's reset steps only restore Smart Program times and temperatures to factory defaults. To disconnect, the manual says to select Cancel, then pull the plug, not the cord.
Why is my Instant Vortex Plus not heating up?
Instant's manual has no troubleshooting entry for a unit that runs but doesn't heat. It does say the basket front sits flush with the unit when inserted securely, that Reheat and Dehydrate don't preheat, and that Reheat doesn't prompt Add Food. If none of that explains it, contact Consumer Care.
Has the Instant Vortex Plus 6-quart been recalled?
CPSC's recall database, searched on September 27, 2026, returned no recall for any Instant or Vortex air fryer. The only Instant-titled product recall it returned was a 2015 Instant Pot pressure cooker recall. Search cpsc.gov with the model number from the back of your unit to check for yourself.
