Fellow Aiden Review: Temperature, Problems, Reliability
Fellow Aiden review from ATK, CNN and Coffee Chronicler data: brew temperatures that disagree, owner-reported failures, and who should skip it.
The short answer
An SCA-certified drip brewer with per-phase temperature control and ATK and CNN picks behind it, but measured carafe heat varies widely and owner failure reports mean durability is unproven.
Strengths
- Per-phase temperature, bloom and pulse control, with a 50 to 99°C setting range, per Coffee Chronicler
- Single-serve cone basket (up to 3 cups) and a batch basket (3 to 12 cups), per Tom's Guide; 1.5 L tank, per Fellow's manual
- Named Best Programmable Model by America's Test Kitchen and best programmable drip coffee maker by CNN Underscored
- On the SCA Certified Home Brewer list, certified 2024, per the SCA
- No hot plate to scorch coffee; brews into a thermal carafe, per CNN Underscored
Weaknesses
- Carafe heat loss: CNN Underscored's single review measured a half pot at 110°F about 2.5 hours after brewing
- Carafe lid can feel 'suctioned on', and the tank's narrow opening is on the left, per America's Test Kitchen
- Mostly plastic build, per Coffee Chronicler; flimsy in places, per Tom's Guide
- App asks for a login every time it opens and new profiles don't sync to the brewer automatically, per Coffee Chronicler
- Trustpilot owners report 'Add Water', 'Flush failed' and heating faults within weeks or months
The short Fellow Aiden review: it’s an app-connected drip brewer with temperature you can program per brewing phase, and it’s on the SCA Certified Home Brewer list (certified 2024). America’s Test Kitchen named it Best Programmable Model, and CNN Underscored named it the best programmable drip coffee maker. The weak spots are heat and durability. Testers’ temperature readings disagree, and owners on Trustpilot report water-sensor and heating failures within weeks or months.
We haven’t brewed with one ourselves. This page pulls together what independent testers measured and what owners report.
It sits on our best drip coffee makers hub, where it’s ranked against the Moccamaster, OXO and Ninja machines by weight of evidence.
Coffee Chronicler reports that the Aiden lets you set temperatures from 50 to 99°C, and that temperature probes showed it hitting its targets, even on a profile alternating between 50 and 90°C. Bloom, pulse brewing and ratio are programmable too, saved as brew profiles.
Fellow Aiden specs at a glance
| Spec | Value | Label |
|---|---|---|
| Model | BR01AAUS | Manufacturer spec |
| Power | 120 V, 1700 W | Manufacturer spec |
| Capacity | 1.5 L / 50.72 oz | Manufacturer spec |
| Size | 9.33 x 9.02 x 12 in | Manufacturer spec |
| Weight | 9.4 lb (Tom’s Guide lists 9.6 lb) | Manufacturer spec; Tom’s Guide |
| Warranty | 2-year limited (3 years if registered, per Tom’s Guide and CNN) | Manufacturer spec; Tom’s Guide, CNN |
| Filters | Melitta #2 cone (single serve), Melitta 8-12 cup basket | Tom’s Guide |
The manufacturer specs come from Fellow’s safety manual, hosted by Williams-Sonoma (Fellow Aiden manual, PDF). Two figures drift between sources. Tom’s Guide lists 9.6 lb and a three-year warranty with registration, while the manual says 9.4 lb and a two-year limited warranty. CNN Underscored also says two years standard and three if you register, so the extra year appears to depend on registering, which the manual doesn’t mention.
Fellow Aiden coffee temperature: the measurements disagree
Four sets of readings exist, and they don’t line up. America’s Test Kitchen measured freshly brewed coffee at 182°F. CNN Underscored measured 167°F at the end of a full brew. The later carafe readings vary just as much.
| Source | What was measured | Result | Conditions / method | Label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| America’s Test Kitchen | Freshly brewed coffee in the carafe | 182°F | Not detailed for this model | Third-party measurement, ATK |
| America’s Test Kitchen | Share of brew cycle with water at 194-205°F | 57% | Water temperature tracked during the cycle | Third-party measurement, ATK |
| CNN Underscored, best list, Sept 2025 | Coffee at end of brew | Typically 167°F | Kitchen thermometer, right after each full brew | Third-party measurement, CNN |
| CNN Underscored, best list | Carafe after 1.5 h | About 145°F | Judged against a 120-140°F window | Third-party measurement, CNN |
| CNN Underscored, single review, Jan 2025 | Carafe, about 30 min / 2.5 h / 4.5 h | 147°F / 110°F / 91°F | Half pot | Third-party measurement, CNN review |
| Coffee Chronicler | Carafe at 50 and 120 min | About 70°C both times | Method not stated; reviewer says the Moccamaster with hot plate was similar | Third-party measurement, Coffee Chronicler |
Why they differ. Each tester measured at a different point, with a different fill level and tool. A half pot loses heat faster than a full one, which CNN’s own reviewer expected. ATK’s figure is for freshly brewed coffee, while CNN’s 167°F is a kitchen-thermometer reading just after a full brew. There’s no hot plate, so everything after the brew depends on the thermal carafe.
These numbers shouldn’t be averaged, and none of them settles the question. ATK’s 182°F reading says the carafe can start near 180°F. CNN’s readings say you shouldn’t count on it.
How long does the Fellow Aiden take to brew?
America’s Test Kitchen timed 6 minutes 30 seconds on a regular brew and 10 minutes in guided mode. CNN Underscored says default settings brew in just over seven minutes. Tom’s Guide gives about 4 minutes at minimum and up to 15 for a full carafe. Pour-over-style profiles with blooms and pulses take longer by design. For slowness in drip machines generally, see why is my coffee maker slow.
Fellow Aiden problems: what owners and reviewers report
These are attributed reports, not failure rates. Complaint sites skew negative, because satisfied owners rarely post.
- Water and heating faults (Trustpilot). Fellow’s Trustpilot page covers all Fellow products and scores 2.3 of 5 from about 50 reviews. Aiden owners there report “Add Water” messages with a full tank, a “Flush failed” error, and a unit that stopped heating and wouldn’t complete a brew. Reported timelines run from about six weeks to two months. One February 2026 reviewer says the first unit failed within two months and several replacements followed. A September 2026 reviewer gave the coffee five stars and the reliability zero.
- App friction (Coffee Chronicler). The app asks for a login every time it opens, first-time pairing failed for days, and new profiles don’t sync to the brewer on their own. Tom’s Guide says the app isn’t essential, which fits: you can brew from the machine’s single click wheel. Coffee Chronicler notes that wheel has no back button.
- Carafe quirks (Coffee Chronicler). When a small dripper sits in the large basket insert, the machine still requires the thermal carafe in place. Coffee in the carafe has a concentration gradient, with the bottom nearly twice as strong as the top, so it needs a stir. Closing the machine right after brewing traps condensation, and the reviewer noticed a mildew smell the next morning.
- Lid and tank (America’s Test Kitchen). The carafe lid held so tight before cleaning that it “felt like it was suctioned on”. The tank’s narrow opening is on the left side, harder to fill for right-handed users.
- Shower head (sources disagree). Tom’s Guide says the machine detects which basket is in, but doesn’t remind you to switch the shower-head setting for small batches. CNN Underscored says the on-screen steps do remind you to rotate the shower head for smaller batches. Firmware versions may differ between the two reviews.
- Build (Coffee Chronicler, Tom’s Guide). Mostly plastic, per Coffee Chronicler, and flimsy in places, per Tom’s Guide.
- App at launch (Engadget). In November 2024, Engadget found the app handled only firmware updates, the clock and naming, with shareable profiles, scheduling and remote control “coming soon”. A later note on that review says shareable profiles were added.
Is the Fellow Aiden reliable?
No independent failure-rate data exists, so this is a weighing of thin evidence. On the positive side, Eight Ounce Coffee, a retailer that sells the Aiden, published a one-year write-up in October 2025 saying its unit is still going strong after daily use. Coffee Chronicler’s review is based on several months with the machine.
On the negative side are the Trustpilot reports above of water-sensor and heating faults within weeks or months.
A CPSC recall search on October 4, 2026 found no Fellow or Aiden recall. Fellow’s manual gives a two-year limited warranty and says opening the appliance voids it. Tom’s Guide and CNN say registering adds a third year. One working unit on one side and a cluster of complaints on the other isn’t enough to call the Aiden reliable or unreliable.
How do you descale and clean the Fellow Aiden?
Per Fellow’s safety manual:
- Descale roughly once every three months. The machine tracks lifetime water volume and shows a “descale” notice. Run it from Settings, then Maintenance, then Descale, with a biodegradable, phosphate-free liquid descaler. The manual says the whole process takes about 30 minutes.
- No vinegar. Fellow doesn’t recommend it, because it’s hard to rinse out and may affect flavor.
- Only the two filter baskets are dishwasher safe. That leaves out the carafe, which Eight Ounce Coffee also says isn’t dishwasher safe.
- Don’t submerge the machine or run water over it, and don’t fill above the maximum fill point.
- Scalding may occur if the lid is opened during brewing.
For the general method, see how to descale a coffee maker and vinegar vs descaler. For the Aiden, Fellow’s manual specifies a liquid descaler.
Who should buy the Aiden, and who should skip it
Buy it if you want pour-over-style control over bloom, pulses and temperature, one machine for single cups and full batches, and SCA certification.
Skip it if you want coffee that’s still hot hours later, given CNN’s half-pot reading of 110°F at about 2.5 hours. Also skip it if you’d rather not deal with an app or a click-wheel menu, or if you want proven long-term durability. For how much carafe type matters, see thermal vs glass carafe.
The simpler alternative on the same hub is the Moccamaster. CNN Underscored describes the Moccamaster KBGV, the hot-plate version, as a straightforward two-button machine with little customization. Our Moccamaster KBT review covers the thermal model, and Moccamaster KBT vs KBGV Select compares thermal and hot-plate versions. For the full ranking, see best drip coffee makers.

Frequently asked questions
How hot does the Fellow Aiden brew?
It depends on who measured it. America's Test Kitchen recorded freshly brewed coffee at 182°F and found the brewing water in the 194 to 205°F range for 57% of the cycle. CNN Underscored says its extractions were typically 167°F, measured with a kitchen thermometer right after each full brew. Coffee Chronicler reports a settable range of 50 to 99°C. The sources conflict, so no single number is reliable.
Does the Fellow Aiden keep coffee hot?
It keeps coffee warm, not hot, for long. CNN Underscored's best-list test found about 145°F after 1.5 hours, and its single review measured a half pot at 110°F about 2.5 hours after brewing. Coffee Chronicler reports about 70°C at 50 and 120 minutes. There is no hot plate, so the thermal carafe does all the work.
Is the Fellow Aiden SCA certified?
Yes. The Specialty Coffee Association's Certified Home Brewer list includes the Fellow Aiden Precision Coffee Maker, certified in 2024, with a 10-cup capacity and a single-serve option. America's Test Kitchen also lists it as SCA certified. The SCA's equipment standards are posted in its membership portal, so the exact pass marks aren't public.
How often should you descale the Fellow Aiden?
Roughly once every three months, according to Fellow's safety manual. The machine tracks how much water has passed through it and shows a descale notice when it's due. The manual says to use a phosphate-free liquid descaler, not vinegar, and to start the cycle from Settings, then Maintenance, then Descale. The whole process takes about 30 minutes.
Has the Fellow Aiden been recalled?
No recall has been found. A search of the CPSC's recall database on October 4, 2026, for 'Fellow' in recall titles returned only unrelated light fixtures and footrests, and a search for 'Aiden' returned no results. That covers formal US recalls only, not the owner complaints posted on review sites.
