Moccamaster KBT Review: What the Measurements Show
Moccamaster KBT review: brew temps ATK and TechGearLab measured, carafe heat claims that conflict, owner complaints and the SCA list check.
The short answer
America's Test Kitchen's winner and TechGearLab's #1 of 11, but at $349 (Moccamaster's US store, Oct 4, 2026) it has no timer, its warranty excludes the carafe, and its SCA certification is not on the SCA's own list.
Strengths
- America's Test Kitchen's winner: brew water in the ideal range for 91% of the cycle, fresh coffee at 186°F
- TechGearLab's #1 of 11 drip brewers (overall score 85), with a 201.7°F average peak brew temperature
- 5-year warranty on a new brewer, per Moccamaster's manual; ATK notes the plastic parts are cheap to replace
- RedditRecs counts owner sentiment at 85% positive (88 positive, 6 negative, 9 neutral), with durability the top praise
Weaknesses
- No timer or scheduled brewing, per CNET, America's Test Kitchen and TechGearLab
- $349 at Moccamaster's US store on Oct 4, 2026; CNET lists the price and the counter space it takes as cons
- Warranty excludes the carafe and parts, and defects from lack of descaling are not covered, per Moccamaster's manual
- Carafe hold-time claims conflict: up to 1 hour (Moccamaster), 2 hours (ATK), 6 hours (CNET, no published measurement)
- Sold as SCA certified, but no Moccamaster appears on the SCA's certified home brewer list (checked Oct 4, 2026)
This Moccamaster KBT review rests on two lab reviews that both rank it first. The KBT is a 10-cup drip brewer with a thermal carafe, a manual drip-stop and no timer, $349 at Moccamaster’s US store on Oct 4, 2026. America’s Test Kitchen named it the winner, with brew water in the ideal range for 91% of the cycle. TechGearLab ranked it #1 of 11. Skip it if you want coffee ready on a timer.
It ranks fourth in our best coffee makers hub, where price counts against it. Below is every number I could source, labeled by who produced it, plus the places where the sources disagree.
Moccamaster KBT review: quick verdict
Buy it if:
- You want steady brew temperature: ATK found 91% of the cycle in its ideal range (its Breville Precision Brewer logged 94%), and TechGearLab measured a 3.36°F standard deviation across the pots it brewed.
- You keep machines a long time. Moccamaster’s manual gives a new brewer 5 years of warranty, and ATK says the plastic parts are easy and cheap to replace.
- You like controlling the drip yourself, which the manual drip-stop allows (ATK).
Skip it if:
- You want a timer. CNET, ATK and TechGearLab all say it has none.
- You want coffee hot for most of the day. The hold-time claims run from 1 to 6 hours, and only one is backed by a stated method.
- You are buying for SCA certification. The KBT is not on the SCA’s list.
KBT specs and what independent reviewers measured
Manufacturer specs come from Moccamaster’s KBT product page and its US manual. Measurements come from two labs with different methods: ATK timed a full pot, while TechGearLab’s brew time is for 6 cups, so the two times are not comparable. CNET reviewed the KBT 741 but publishes no KBT measurements.

TechGearLab’s overall score of 85 weights taste at 50%, where the KBT scored 9.0; its panel compared the coffee to pour-over. ATK’s tasters called it “very strong but smooth.” Those are their panels’ impressions, not ours.
Moccamaster KBT brew temperature: claimed vs measured
Moccamaster claims a brew temperature of 196-205°F. TechGearLab measured an average peak of 201.7°F, inside that range. Its average across the entire brew was 193°F, which sits below both Moccamaster’s claim and the 195-205°F range TechGearLab calls ideal.
ATK measured the share of time rather than an average: the brew water stayed in ATK’s ideal zone of 194-205°F for 91% of the cycle. ATK credits the copper heating element for heating fast and holding steady. CNET cites the SCA for an ideal window of 197-205°F but prints no KBT reading.
Altitude matters too. The manual says the element brings water to a boil, and the boiling point can fall to 198°F at higher elevations, so brewing runs cooler there. For what the temperature standard means, see what an SCA-certified coffee maker is.
How long the Technivorm KBT thermal carafe keeps coffee hot
Short answer: the sources disagree, from 1 hour to 6. Moccamaster’s KBT page says the glass-lined stainless carafe keeps coffee quality “for up to an hour.” ATK, which checks carafe temperature fresh, at 1 hour and at 2 hours, says it kept coffee piping hot for 2 hours, but it publishes no temperatures for those checkpoints.
CNET lists “Keeps coffee hot for 6 hours” as a pro. Its own temperature table stops at 60 minutes and has no Moccamaster row, so that figure has no published measurement. TechGearLab measured 177°F in the carafe, averaged over five brew cycles, but does not say how long after brewing. A photo caption says the carafe keeps coffee hot “for hours,” with no time measured.
Moccamaster’s manual claims the brewer holds coffee at 175-185°F. Moccamaster’s page says every thermal carafe comes with a Brew-Thru Lid and a Travel Lid. The manual says to use the travel lid for transport, and TechGearLab says the travel lid seals the carafe completely and keeps coffee hot longer.
The manual also warns: no dairy or baby food in the carafe, no carbonated drinks, do not drink straight from it, and it is not dishwasher safe. For how thermal carafes compare with hot plates in general, see thermal vs glass carafe.
The 2025 thermal carafe redesign
ATK reports that Technivorm redesigned the KBT’s thermal carafe in 2025. Per ATK, the new carafe also kept coffee piping hot for 2 hours and has an improved pour spout. No other source I read describes the change, so details beyond the spout are unknown. I can’t say which carafe a given retailer is shipping.
Using it: drip-stop, half pots, filters and ratio
The manual recommends brewing no less than 4 cups (16 oz) in its 8- to 10-cup brewers. For a smaller batch, ATK says the manual drip-stop lets you slow the drip from the basket so water spends enough time in the smaller bed of grounds. It can also hold water back to preinfuse.
The manual’s ratio is 55 g of coffee per liter, or 2 tablespoons per 6 oz. For the 40 oz KBT that is 7 level scoops, or 69 g. It calls for a medium to medium-coarse grind and oxygen-whitened paper filters, and advises against gold-mesh or other reusable filters. It also says not to use reverse osmosis or distilled water, which can damage the boiling element. More on dosing in coffee-to-water ratio for drip.
The Way to Coffee calls the KBGT basically the same machine, with an automatic drip-stop that closes when you lift the carafe. If you are choosing between thermal and glass, see Moccamaster KBT vs KBGV Select.
Descaling, cleaning and warranty fine print
The manual says to descale every 100 cycles or at least every 3 months, and it does not recommend vinegar. TechGearLab timed a descale at 18 minutes and notes the brewer has no descale indicator. Steps are in how to descale a coffee maker, and the vinegar question in vinegar vs descaler.
The 5-year warranty covers the brewer “excluding carafe and parts.” A refurbished brewer gets 1 year. Per the manual, the warranty does not cover defects from lack of descaling (“you must descale… to maintain performance and warranty coverage”). Service by anyone other than an authorized service center, or removing the bottom panel, also voids it.
Hand-wash the carafe and basket after each use. For oil stains, the manual says to soak the thermal carafe overnight with a little dishwasher detergent and water.
What KBT owners complain about: price, no timer, plastics
- Overall sentiment. RedditRecs counts Reddit owners at 85% positive: 88 positive, 6 negative, 9 neutral.
- Top cons on Reddit, per RedditRecs: no programmable timer, high price, fragile plastic components and uneven water distribution over the grounds. One commenter says it has “plastics that won’t survive heavyhanded use.” RedditRecs gives no per-complaint counts.
- Top praise is durability and readily available parts. One cafe worker quoted by RedditRecs calls it bomb-proof, brewing a full batch every few hours from 5am to 9pm.
- CNET’s cons: pricier, takes up a lot of space, not programmable.
Is the Moccamaster KBT SCA certified?
Not by the SCA’s own list. Moccamaster’s KBT page says it is “ECBC certified and SCA approved,” the manual says it meets SCA Golden Cup brewing standards, ATK’s spec list says “SCA Certified: Yes,” and TechGearLab lists it as an SCA Certified Home Brewer, adding that “you’ll see a lot of Moccamasters on the list.”
The SCA’s Certified Home Equipment page, checked on October 4, 2026, lists brewers from OXO, Fellow, Breville, KRUPS, Zwilling and others, but no Technivorm or Moccamaster model. The SCA says certification runs on a three-year licensing term, and I could not confirm whether any Moccamaster was listed earlier. I don’t call it certified until the SCA lists it.
Is Moccamaster worth it? Who should skip the KBT
On the evidence, yes, if brew quality and longevity are what you pay for. It tops both lab reviews with numbers behind them, it carries a 5-year warranty, and Reddit owners mostly praise durability and parts support. Against that: $349 at Moccamaster’s US store on Oct 4, 2026, no timer, a carafe the warranty does not cover, hold-time claims that conflict, and an SCA claim the SCA does not list.
Skip it if price or a timer matters more. The OXO Brew 8-Cup is on the SCA’s list, though ATK measured it in the ideal range for 54% of the cycle against the KBT’s 91%. The head-to-head is in OXO Brew 8-Cup vs Moccamaster KBT. If you want coffee ready when you wake up, the Ninja CE251 has scheduled brewing, per TechGearLab.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the Moccamaster KBT keep coffee hot?
The sources disagree. Moccamaster's own KBT page says the carafe keeps coffee quality for up to an hour. America's Test Kitchen checked carafe temperature at 1 and 2 hours and says it stayed piping hot for 2 hours. CNET says 6 hours, but its published temperature table has no Moccamaster row and stops at 60 minutes.
What temperature does the Moccamaster KBT brew at?
Moccamaster claims 196 to 205°F. TechGearLab measured an average peak of 201.7°F and an average of 193°F across the whole brew, with a 3.36°F standard deviation. America's Test Kitchen found the brew water in the ideal range for 91% of the cycle and fresh coffee at 186°F in the carafe.
Is the Moccamaster KBT programmable?
No. CNET lists not programmable as a con, America's Test Kitchen's spec list says Programmable: No, and TechGearLab lists no scheduled brewing. The KBT has a single on/off switch and a manual drip-stop on the basket. RedditRecs also counts the missing timer among the top owner complaints.
Can you brew a half pot in the Moccamaster KBT?
Yes, down to 4 cups. Moccamaster's manual recommends brewing no less than 4 cups, or 16 oz, in its 8- to 10-cup brewers. America's Test Kitchen says the KBT's manual drip-stop lets you slow the drip from the basket for a half pot, so the water spends enough time in the smaller bed of coffee.
What is the difference between the Moccamaster KBT and KBGT?
The brew basket. The Way to Coffee says the KBT has a manual drip-stop you open and close yourself, while the KBGT's drip-stop closes automatically when you lift the carafe out. Both use a glass-lined stainless steel thermal carafe, and The Way to Coffee calls them basically the same machine otherwise.
