OXO Brew 8 Cup Review: Measured Temps, Flaws, Carafe Data
OXO Brew 8 Cup review built on independent measurements: brew temps, carafe heat loss over an hour, the fixed water tank, and who should skip it.
The short answer
A compact, simple thermal-carafe brewer that CNET names best overall and America's Test Kitchen recommends, but two independent measurements put its brew temperature below the SCA range for part or all of the cycle, it has no timer and its water tank does not come off.
Strengths
- CNET's best overall coffee maker, and the fastest in its roundup at 4 min 35 s for 8 cups
- Thermal carafe held coffee at 169°F after 60 minutes in CNET's measurements, with no hot plate to scorch it
- Compact: 13.5 in tall to fit under cabinets, per Tom's Guide
- TechGearLab scored it 74 of 100 (fifth of 11 tested), with 8.5 of 10 for brew quality
- The manual gives a clear SCA Golden Cup dosing table, which ATK says it appreciated
Weaknesses
- Brew temperature in the ideal range for only 54% of the cycle, per America's Test Kitchen; TechGearLab's 193.6°F average is below the 195-204°F target
- Water tank is not removable, per Tom's Guide
- No timer, strength or temperature settings, per Tom's Guide and CNET
- Single-serve accessory needs Kalita Wave 185 filters, which Tom's Guide says you will likely buy online
- RedditRecs' summary of Reddit owners lists inconsistent extraction with light roasts and a carafe that is hard to clean, retains odors and pours poorly
My OXO Brew 8 Cup review in short: it is a compact, simple brewer with a thermal carafe that independent reviewers rate well. CNET names it best overall, America’s Test Kitchen lists it as “Also Great” and TechGearLab scores it 74 of 100, fifth of 11. Its measured brew temperature varies by reviewer, though, and it has no timer or removable tank.
At $219.95 at Amazon on Oct 3, 2026, it is a strong pick if you want a small machine and no hot plate. It is a weaker one if you want programming or the hottest possible brew. For the whole category, ranked by weight of evidence, see the best coffee makers.

Brew temperature: does the OXO 8 cup brew hot enough?
The independent numbers do not agree, and they are not all measuring the same thing. TechGearLab recorded an average brew temperature of 193.6°F, which it notes is below the SCA’s suggested 195°F to 204°F. America’s Test Kitchen found the water temperature in the ideal range for only 54% of the cycle, and the fresh coffee at 183°F. OXO’s own claim, on its Amazon listing, is that water hits the grounds at 194-205°F.
CNET recorded 177°F right after brewing, and Tom’s Guide 175°F. Those two are temperatures of the brewed coffee, after the water has passed through the grounds and filter. TechGearLab labels its figure a brew temperature and says it measured the brew basket and the carafe separately, so its number would be expected to run higher. Comparing 193.6°F with 175°F directly would be comparing different points in the process.
What the numbers share: none shows the OXO sitting comfortably inside the 195-204°F window for the whole brew. ATK still measured 1.32% total dissolved solids and 20.3% extraction, and its tasters called the coffee “mild,” “rounded” and “gentle.” TechGearLab’s tasters disagreed, describing heavy, roasty, bitter flavors. RedditRecs, which summarizes 62 Reddit reviews, lists inconsistent extraction and poor taste with light roasts as a top complaint.
OXO Brew 8 cup thermal carafe temperature over an hour
CNET’s roundup is the only source I found that tracks the carafe for a full hour: 177°F after brewing, 174°F at 15 minutes, 171°F at 30 minutes and 169°F at 60 minutes. Tom’s Guide saw a steeper drop, from 175°F to 165°F after 20 minutes. The two batches, rooms and starting points differ, so the gap is not surprising.
There is no warming plate, which Tom’s Guide counts as a plus because nothing scorches the coffee. Owner opinion is less tidy: Amazon’s AI-generated “Customers say” summary, read on Oct 3, 2026, says temperature retention gets mixed feedback, with some owners saying it keeps coffee hot and others that it does not. CNET also says the carafe kept coffee at a 160°F serving temperature for hours.
Two carafe rules come from the OXO manual. It is not dishwasher safe, because a dishwasher will compromise the vacuum insulation. And the screw-on lid’s opening must line up with the spout, or it leaks. For how thermal and glass carafes compare in general, see thermal vs glass carafe.
How long does the OXO Brew 8 Cup take to brew?
CNET timed 8 cups at 4 minutes 35 seconds, the fastest in its roundup. TechGearLab averaged 5.4 minutes for 6 cups, and Tom’s Guide reports about five minutes for 6 cups. America’s Test Kitchen averaged 6 minutes 26 seconds without stating the batch size in its listing. Because batch sizes differ, read these as a range, from 4 min 35 s to 6 min 26 s, rather than one answer.
OXO 8 cup coffee maker problems owners and reviewers report
None of the sources I read gives a failure rate or a share of owners for any of these. Treat them as recurring themes, not frequencies.
- The water tank does not come off. Tom’s Guide calls this the main design flaw: you fill it from a separate vessel, and cleaning is harder.
- No timer and no settings. Tom’s Guide found no temperature, strength or programming options, and CNET’s comparison table lists it as not programmable. RedditRecs’ summary lists the missing timer among owner complaints.
- Two baskets and an odd filter. You swap between a large basket and a single-serve accessory for 2-4 cups. ATK calls the swap slightly less convenient than models that do not need it. Tom’s Guide says the accessory’s Kalita Wave 185 filters are a size you probably won’t find in the supermarket.
- The carafe lid and pour. Tom’s Guide says the lid’s deep threads need several turns. RedditRecs’ summary of Reddit owners says the carafe is hard to clean, retains odors and pours poorly.
- Units that stop working. Amazon’s “Customers say” summary says reliability gets mixed reviews, with some owners reporting it stops working unexpectedly; it gives no rate. RedditRecs’ summary, by contrast, lists long-lasting durability among the top pros.
- Light roasts. RedditRecs lists inconsistent extraction and poor taste with light roasts. That may relate to the below-range brew temperatures TechGearLab and ATK measured, but no source tests the link.
- Overflows and leaks. Amazon’s summary says some owners report coffee spilling when pouring and overflowing. The manual’s troubleshooting for an overflowing basket lists two stacked filters, a blocked drain hole, the wrong Mug/Carafe switch position, a grind that is too fine, a basket not snapped in and a carafe not seated.
Is the OXO Brew 8-Cup SCA certified?
Sources disagree about which version is certified. America’s Test Kitchen, TechGearLab, CNET and Tom’s Guide all describe the 8-cup as SCA certified, and OXO’s Amazon listing for the thermal model calls it an SCA Certified Home Brewer. The SCA’s certified home brewer list, as I read it on Oct 3, 2026, names an “OXO Brew 8-Cup Coffee Maker” certified in 2025, with a glass carafe listed among its features, and does not give a model number. The same list also gives a glass carafe for the OXO Brew 12-Cup, which ATK describes as thermal, so the feature text may not identify the variant.
Gear Patrol adds that only coffee brewed on the 5-8 cup setting was certified, because the SCA had no single-serve standard. Its review dates from 2020 (updated 2022), before the SCA’s 2025 listing, so that scope may have changed. For what the badge involves, see what an SCA-certified coffee maker is.
Using it: brew sizes, single-serve and the coffee ratio
This is what the OXO manual says, not first-hand use. Dosing is about 8 g of medium-ground coffee per 5 fl oz cup, based on the SCA Golden Cup Standard. That runs from 16 g for 2 cups up to 64 g for 8, and one OXO scoop holds about 8 g. The machine uses all the water you put in the tank, so measure it.
Two buttons cover 2-4 and 5-8 cups. To brew into a mug, push the Mug/Carafe switch to Mug. If the switch is not on Mug, the manual says the brew basket will not drain and could overflow. Mug mode allows no more than 4 cups (20 fl oz). The reversible well cover flips to raise a short mug and comes out for a tall one.
Cleaning and descaling the OXO 8718800
Per the manual, the clean light comes on every 90 cycles. The clean cycle takes about 25 minutes, depending on mineral build-up, and you follow it with a water-only 5-8 cup rinse at the MAX line. OXO says the warranty is void if descaling is not carried out as the manual describes.
The carafe and lid are hand-wash only; other removable parts can go on the top rack. OXO recommends filtered water and says not to use distilled. For the full method, see how to descale a coffee maker and vinegar vs descaler.
Who the OXO 8-Cup suits, and who should skip it
Buy it if you want a small machine with two buttons and a thermal carafe instead of a hot plate. Tom’s Guide notes it is 13.5 inches tall so it fits under cabinets, and CNET measured the fastest 8-cup brew in its roundup.
Skip it if you want a timer, a removable tank or the hottest brew you can get. ATK’s winner is the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT, a sibling of the Moccamaster KBGV Select, and it costs more. TechGearLab points to the programmable Ninja 12-Cup CE251 as a cheaper alternative; see our Ninja CE251 review. The best coffee makers hub ranks all of them.
Price: $219.95 at Amazon on Oct 3, 2026. Tom’s Guide’s April 2025 review gave $199.99. The price box on this page shows the live figure.

Frequently asked questions
How hot does the OXO Brew 8-Cup brew?
It depends on who measured it and where. TechGearLab recorded an average brew temperature of 193.6°F, just under the 195-204°F target. America's Test Kitchen found the water in the ideal range for 54% of the cycle and the fresh coffee at 183°F. CNET read 177°F and Tom's Guide 175°F in the brewed coffee right after brewing. OXO's own Amazon listing claims the water hits the grounds at 194-205°F.
How long does the OXO 8-cup thermal carafe keep coffee hot?
About an hour with only a small drop, in CNET's measurements: 177°F right after brewing, 174°F at 15 minutes, 171°F at 30 minutes and 169°F at 60 minutes. Tom's Guide recorded a faster fall, from 175°F to 165°F after 20 minutes. Amazon's AI review summary says owners are split on heat retention. The machine has no warming plate, so the carafe is the only thing holding heat.
Is the OXO Brew 8-Cup water tank removable?
No. Tom's Guide names the fixed reservoir as the machine's main flaw: you need a measuring cup or another vessel to fill it, and it is harder to clean than a tank that lifts out. The manual adds that the machine uses all the water you put in, so measure what you add.
Is the OXO 8-cup carafe dishwasher safe?
No. OXO's manual says the carafe and lid are hand-wash only because a dishwasher will compromise the carafe's vacuum insulation. The other removable parts are top-rack dishwasher safe. For coffee oil stains, the manual suggests soaking the carafe overnight with a small amount of dishwasher detergent and water.
Why is my OXO coffee maker overflowing or leaking?
OXO's troubleshooting section lists the usual causes: two paper filters stacked, a blocked drain hole in the brew basket, the Mug/Carafe switch in the wrong position, a grind that is too fine, or the carafe not seated. For the carafe, the manual says to align the lid opening with the spout to prevent leaking.
