OXO Brew 8 Cup vs Moccamaster KBT: Measured Head to Head
OXO Brew 8 Cup vs Moccamaster KBT: same 40 oz, but ATK found the KBT in the ideal brew range 91% of the cycle vs 54%. Specs, carafe data, warranty.
OXO Brew 8 Cup vs Moccamaster KBT: both make the same 40 oz pot (manufacturer specs), and the KBT is the better brewer on the evidence. America’s Test Kitchen ranked it the winner and the OXO “also great.” It measured ideal-range water for 91% of the KBT’s cycle vs 54% for the OXO. Buy the OXO for about $130 to $145 less (prices seen Oct 4, 2026), a shorter body and mug mode.
Quick verdict: OXO 8-cup or Moccamaster KBT
- Buy the Moccamaster KBT if brew temperature and longevity matter most. It has a 5-year warranty against the OXO’s 2 years, per both manuals, and Reddit owners summarized by RedditRecs cite durability and easy repair with available parts.
- Buy the OXO Brew 8-Cup if you want to spend less or brew single mugs. It is also the one for under-cabinet counters: 13.5 in tall per Tom’s Guide, vs the KBT’s 15.25 in manufacturer spec.
- Neither has a timer. CNET lists the KBT as not programmable; Tom’s Guide says the same of the OXO.

Which brews hotter, the OXO or the Moccamaster?
The sources measure different things, which is why their numbers seem to clash. America’s Test Kitchen reports how much of the brew cycle the water spends in the ideal range: 91% for the KBT, 54% for the OXO. TechGearLab averages brew-water temperature and found the two nearly identical, 193°F for the KBT and 193.6°F for the OXO, though the KBT’s average maximum reached 201.7°F. CNET and Tom’s Guide read the coffee in the carafe after brewing, which is cooler again.
America’s Test Kitchen’s data shows the KBT spending far more of its cycle in range. TechGearLab’s averages show almost no gap, so the sources disagree on how much the difference matters. Moccamaster’s manual explains its approach: the copper element brings water to a boil, and at high elevation boiling can be as low as 198°F, which means cooler brewing. Our OXO Brew 8-Cup review covers the OXO’s below-range readings in more detail.
Brew time, extraction and what tasters said
For a full pot, America’s Test Kitchen timed the two within 10 seconds of each other (6:26 OXO, 6:36 KBT). TechGearLab found the KBT the faster of the two for 6 cups, 4.3 minutes against 5.4. CNET timed the OXO at 4 minutes 35 seconds for 8 cups but did not put the KBT in its measured table.
The extraction data cuts the other way. America’s Test Kitchen measured higher strength and extraction from the OXO (1.32% TDS, 20.3%) than the KBT (1.22%, 18.9%). Yet its tasters called the KBT “very strong but smooth” and the OXO “mild,” and TechGearLab’s taste scores were 9.0 for the KBT and 6.6 for the OXO. The numbers and the panels point in different directions, so taste is the least settled part of this comparison.
Thermal carafe heat: which keeps coffee hotter
No source measured both carafes on the same protocol. For the OXO, CNET recorded 177°F after brewing, 174°F at 15 minutes, 171°F at 30 and 169°F at 60. Tom’s Guide read 175°F falling to 165°F after 20 minutes.
For the KBT, America’s Test Kitchen says the carafe kept coffee hot for 2 hours, and notes a 2025 carafe redesign with an improved pour spout. Moccamaster’s own page claims quality for up to an hour, and CNET says 6 hours without showing a measurement. More on carafe types in thermal vs glass carafe.
SCA certification: what the SCA list actually shows
The SCA’s certified home brewer list, read October 4, 2026, names the “OXO Brew 8-Cup Coffee Maker” as certified in 2025. Its entry gives no model number and lists a glass carafe as a feature, while the 8718800 ships with a stainless thermal carafe. No Technivorm or Moccamaster model appears on that list, although Moccamaster’s KBT page says it is “SCA approved” and America’s Test Kitchen’s spec box lists the KBT as SCA certified. Sources conflict, so treat the KBT’s status as a manufacturer claim; see what SCA certified means.
Size, build and warranty fine print
Tom’s Guide says the OXO is 13.5 inches tall and designed to fit under kitchen cabinets. Moccamaster lists the KBT at 15.25 x 11.5 x 6.75 inches and 6 lb (manufacturer spec), and its manual describes a copper heating element. TechGearLab warns it may be too tall for some counters.
Both warranties depend on descaling. OXO’s manual says its two-year warranty is voided if descaling is not done as instructed. Moccamaster’s manual gives five years on a new brewer, excluding the carafe and parts, and says regular descaling is required to keep coverage.
Day-to-day use: buttons, mug mode and half pots
The OXO has two buttons, 2-4 cups and 5-8 cups, plus a Mug/Carafe switch; its manual caps mug mode at 20 fl oz. A single-serve accessory takes Kalita Wave 185 filters, which Tom’s Guide says you’ll likely buy online. Tom’s Guide also notes the water tank isn’t removable.
The KBT has an on/off switch and a manual drip-stop basket (manufacturer spec). Moccamaster’s manual recommends brewing no less than 4 cups, or 16 oz, so it is not a single-mug machine. The KBT vs KBGV Select comparison covers how the drip-stop handles half pots.
What Reddit owners complain about on each machine
RedditRecs’ sentiment breakdown for the KBT counts 88 positive, 6 neutral and 9 negative Reddit reviewers. The cons it lists are no programmable timer, high price, fragile plastic components and uneven water distribution over the grounds.
For the OXO it counts 35 positive, 3 neutral and 7 negative. Its OXO cons are inconsistent extraction with light roasts, no timer and a carafe that is hard to clean, holds odors and pours poorly. That last point conflicts with America’s Test Kitchen, which called the OXO’s carafe especially easy to handle. Neither summary gives failure rates.
Is the Moccamaster worth about $130 more?
On October 4, 2026, Moccamaster’s US store listed the KBT at $349. The Amazon prices for the OXO shown on America’s Test Kitchen, Tom’s Guide and CNET ranged from $205 to $220. That roughly $130 to $145 buys three more warranty years and, per America’s Test Kitchen, 37 more percentage points of the brew cycle in the ideal temperature range. If neither matters to you, the OXO is the reasonable buy.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Moccamaster KBT better than the OXO Brew 8-Cup?
On the independent evidence, yes. America's Test Kitchen ranked the KBT the winner and the OXO 'also great,' and measured water in the 194-205°F range for 91% of the KBT's cycle against 54% for the OXO. TechGearLab's average brew temperatures were nearly identical. The OXO cost about $130 to $145 less on Oct 4, 2026, is shorter and can brew into a mug.
Do the OXO 8-cup and Moccamaster KBT make the same amount of coffee?
Yes, both make 40 ounces at full capacity. OXO's manual lists 8 cups as 40 oz using a 5 fl oz cup, and Moccamaster lists the KBT as 1.25 liters, 40 oz or 10 cups using a 4 oz European cup. The different cup counts come from different cup sizes, not different pot sizes.
Is the OXO Brew 8-Cup or the Moccamaster KBT SCA certified?
Only the OXO appears on the SCA's own list. As read on October 4, 2026, the SCA's certified home brewer page names the OXO Brew 8-Cup Coffee Maker, certified 2025, though its feature text mentions a glass carafe. No Moccamaster model appears there, even though Moccamaster's KBT page calls it SCA approved and America's Test Kitchen lists it as SCA certified.
Which thermal carafe keeps coffee hot longer, OXO or Moccamaster?
No source measured both carafes the same way, so there is no clean answer. CNET measured the OXO's coffee falling from 177°F to 169°F over 60 minutes. America's Test Kitchen said the KBT's carafe kept coffee hot for 2 hours, while Moccamaster itself claims quality holds for up to an hour.
Is either the OXO 8-cup or the Moccamaster KBT programmable?
No, neither has a timer or delayed brew. CNET lists 'not programmable' as a KBT con, and Tom's Guide says the OXO has no option to program it ahead of time, and no temperature or strength setting. The OXO has two batch buttons and a Mug/Carafe switch; the KBT has an on/off switch.
